FWIW, I seemed to land more interviews by kinking the cover letter.
I tried to say or give the reader just one thing to get them to want to interview me. It works or does not work and the resume format did not seem to matter.
Example: I said skiing, boss interviewed me just to talk skiing - got hired. Mentioned investing, got interviewed and hired. Mentioned post-retirement, got interviewed and hired. Mentioned work approach, got interviewed.
Another way to kink the cover letter is to name the recipient. It works to have an employee hand deliver your cover letter to the hiring boss (not the personnel flunky) with a hand written note, i.e. "Captn asked that I give you this."
Here's a variation on the above kink. Since you are no doubt a member of the local Purchasing Agents group, ask a member of Company A if he/she would kindly send your resume to Company B hiring boss. Have it all pre-addressed, give him/her a pen and ask them to write on the outside envelope, "Captn asked that I give you this."
Just some ideas to get you started. Good Luck!
