Also, is each tyer to get 2 flies of the same pattern? Or should we tie 2 flies per tyer with 2 different patterns (one each pattern)?

And do we post the pattern(s) we will tie, or is it more of a secret - just send them in a month.

Finally, Can we tie all around patterns that work all year, or just winter type patterns (which would make it more limited)? Are Deschutes specific steelhead patterns ok?

Big thanks, Steve.

Hey Steve,

We will plan on tying 24 total flies for the swap...your math looks good to me.

I'm planning to tie 24 of the same pattern, so that everybody gets 2 of the same.

Posting patterns would help...so that we don't all tie the same thing. I will try and update the original post as the responses trickle in.

Lastly, you can tie anything you want, but this was originally intended to be a trout fly swap. I am not going to be a swap nazi, so a D-specific steelhead pattern would be cool if you have something in mind.

Hope this helps. I have never organized one of these deals before so feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

Thought it was a trout swap?

Either way, I will be tying some sort of articluted nymph, stone, pheasant tail, I haven't decided yet.

Hey Chris...a steelhead is just an elusive trout...... wink

Once again.....tried to post a photo of my fly, but it is not found...????? I upload it and it says it's "successful", but does not show up in my Westfly photos...WTH?????
One of the reasons I do not post many photos.

Thanks for the info, I have never done a fly swap before and want to follow the "ground rules".

Put me down for a Black stonefly nymph w/rubber legs. I weight the shank, not use a beadhead. Tough to find a good one in the shops, this is one I developed and use successfully for both trout and steelhead. Yes, I have started using nymphs for steelhead, they work.

I'm a little torn between a mouse pattern or a chum baby for SRCs...it'll most likely be a chum baby or some derivative...that's the direction I'm leaning as of right now anyway.

I know I know, neither is really a "winter" fly, but the chum baby is a great spring fly which is close to winter...

We have had a cancellation and thus an opening has emerged in the fly swap...

If anyone is interested in participating, respond to this thread or send me a PM.

To recap: We are tying 24 trout flies each and will be donating a box for a Westfly auction.

So, after reading through this topic, I am confused on the due date.
Any time restrictions?? All I got was mid December.

Put me down for a no-hackle baetis emerger. Simple fly but a killer for me. Great on the those warmer winter days when are looking upwards.

I am doing mine in stages. Finally decided on an articulated pheasant tail. The tails are done and lashed to the main hooks and I have completed 6 of them in entirety. I am actually pretty stoked because they are turning out pretty good and have a lot of wiggle motion.

At least half of my flies will be BWO dries ... thinking about doing a midge for the second fly of mine. Pic attached, sorry for the shoddy camerawork, my Canon pocket digital does not like focusing on small objects.

damn, can't wait to see some of those BWOs....my favorite hatch of the year.

I like the idea of doing one fly of one and one of another...the reasons are two fold...for starters, I'm selfish & get bored easily while I'm tying, secondly, the chum baby is pretty specialized (spring Puget Sound SRCs)...so, I'll probably end up with one CB and another of something else that's more of a year-round producer.
