ometimes you don't want to know very much. Suppose you've always wondered--just a little--what's so special about the Housatonic River. Or maybe you're planning to visit your great-aunt Ida, who's just moved to Florida, and you're curious about what kind of fly fishing opportunities are nearby.

Sometimes you just want to know a little, just enough to make a go/no-go decision or pick a destination that you'll investigate more thoroughly once you've made that decision. Rather than buy a dozen highly-detailed guide books, you need an overview that will point you down the right road.

Trout Unlimited's 100 Best

Trout Unlimited's Guide to America's 100 Best Trout Streams, by John Ross, is a second edition. It bears a 2005 copyright date and appears to reflect the state of the world in this millennium.

For each stream, there is a quick summary including the location, the type of stream (e.g., freestone tailwater), the angling methods allowed, the gamefish species present, access, season, and where to find supporting services. The fishery is then described in (on average) two pages. Also included for each venue is a map with roads and major towns, but not camping sites or launch points. At the end of each chapter there's a short summary of resources, such as fly shops, accommodations, and books.

The information is up-to-date, the maps are semi-useful, and it points to further resources. It fulfills its mission of telling you a little, then letting your know how to find out more.

Bottom Line: Quick overview of the best places, then points to resources for more info. Useful book Reviewer Rating: 3

Scott Richmond is Westfly's creator and Executive Director. He is the author of eight books on Oregon fly fishing, including Fishing Oregon's Deschutes River (second edition).
